Theater Directing with José Ignacio Vivero
Theater is the art of all arts. It gathers architecture, movement, dance, music, puppetry, masks, cinema, and every discipline of human expression into one living moment. As a director, my work is to bring these elements into the right rhythm and order so they resonate with audiences. We tell stories because stories are how generations communicate, how societies are built, and how meaning is passed from one heart to another. Theater reminds us of who we are—together, in real time—and that is why it endures.

My Approach to Staging
My approach to staging begins and ends with the story. Every play creates its own universe—a world with its own rules, rhythms, colors, and internal logic. My task as a director is to listen to that universe and allow it to suggest how the story must be told. Sometimes we build the world from the inside out, following the emotional and psychological life of the characters; other times we work from the outside in, letting space, imagery, and theatrical codes shape the actor’s path. I search for the elements, the visual language, and the vignettes that can clarify the narrative. The story is the destination, and everything we do—movement, composition, design, pacing—must serve it. I work closely with actors and with every department, because each element of a production is part of what I call the stage’s grammar, and only when that grammar aligns can the play speak its truth.
I bring more than twenty-five years of directing experience across a wide range of theatrical environments. My work includes Off-Broadway productions in New York, independent theaters throughout the United States, and collaborations with companies in the Dominican Republic and Ecuador. I have directed for large institutions, small ensembles, governmental organizations, and educational programs, adapting my approach to the needs and resources of each community. I have also created socially focused projects in partnership with public institutions, using theater as a tool to raise awareness and help audiences engage with issues that affect their daily lives. This breadth of experience continues to shape the way I direct: with flexibility, clarity, and a deep respect for the audiences and communities I serve.

What I Can Direct
I am available to direct a wide variety of theatrical work, from intimate plays to visually driven productions. This includes:
-
New works and contemporary plays in development or full production
-
Classical texts approached with clarity and renewed theatrical language
-
Movement-based or visually expressive pieces
-
Bilingual and multilingual productions
-
Theater integrating puppetry, masks, or strong design elements
-
Youth and family-oriented performances
-
Readings, workshops, and developmental labs
I adapt my directing style to the specific needs of each project, seeking the visual logic, rhythm, and ensemble vocabulary that best serves the story.
If your project needs a director who listens to the story, shapes the world around it, and leads with clarity and imagination, I’d be glad to connect.
